The Bridges of Florence

Most of the ancient Florentine bridges are within easy walking reach of the apartments in Florence city centre. Not only the bridges connect the various districts of the town revealing unique sights, they have also witnessed fundamental chapters of the history of Florence, the city that lies along the banks of the Arno river.

The Ponte Vecchio is almost an obligatory tourist stop in Florence. The gaps between the famous lines of jeweller`s shops right at the centre of the bridge (the only one that was not destroyed during World War II) give wide views of the river: whether under the loggia of the Vasari corridor on the east or beside the monument to Benvenuto Cellini, spend a few minutes admiring the lines of the buildings reflected in the water. After having taken two or three pictures of one of the most romantic places in Florence, you are ready to be dazzled by the glittering jewellers` shop windows. Renting an apartment and not an expensive hotel, you could even afford a luxury jewel!

Even during a brief stay, you can discover various unusual sights of the town. Walking along the river, just a few steps from the celebrated Ponte Vecchio is the Ponte Santa Trinita, which connects the elegant via Tornabuoni to via Maggio. This was part of the route that ducal processions followed outside Florence city walls. Close your eyes... and imagine sumptuous carriages or joyful horse parades.

The heavy merchant carts, instead, used the Ponte alla Carraia, once called Ponte Nuovo (New Bridge), which connects the charming Piazza Goldoni to the Oltrarno district.

At the end of the 19th century, the road needed to be broaden so that the small buildings at the end of the archways of the Ponte alle Grazie were demolished and the statue of the Madonna of the Graces was removed. And the bridge lost much of its charm. However, it still gives spectacular views of the river and of the Ponte Vecchio, the National Library, the gate of San Niccol... Renting a holiday apartment in Florence, you will not have to respect strict timetables (as in hotels and other accommodating facilities) and will be free to enjoy the wonderful panorama at any time of the day or at night, at dawn or at dusk.
