Palazzo Vecchio in Florence

It is impossible not to single out its silhouette among the palaces and the apartments in Florence historic centre!

The Palazzo della Signoria, otherwise renowned as Palazzo Vecchio, stands in one of the most fascinating areas of Florence.

Designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, it was built in the early 14th century. However, the building that is immortalized in thousands of postcards is not the one originally projected by the sculptor and architect from Colle Val d`Elsa; in fact, it is the result of several modifications the building has undergone in course of the centuries.

In the past, it was the seat of the Priori delle Arti and of the Gonfaloniere di Giustizia, or standard bearer of justice, and there lived the members of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1871, when Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, Palazzo Vecchio became the seat of the Parliament: the Chamber of Deputies met in the Salone dei Cinquecento, whereas the Senate met in the Salone dei Dugento. Today Palazzo Vecchio is Florence town hall and - at the same time - a civic museum.

Here some curious news about the building that even the inhabitants of Florence may ignore:
  • Florence so-called laic bell-tower is not at the centre of the faade because it was realized incorporating a pre-existing tower house;

  • Probably the palace was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman theatre and of other pre-existing buildings;

  • It seems that on a stone on the faade is carved the profile of a man... The legend goes that this "sketch" is by Michelangelo.

If for your next holidays you have decided to rent a villa in Florence for one or more weeks, visiting Palazzo Vecchio, which for eight centuries has been Florence political heart, is a must!
