Sports Tourism in Florence: Firenze Marathon and Much More



We have already dedicated another chapter of this tourist guide to the "calcio storico" (or "calcio in costume"). But some running events and the local football team attract to Florence many sporty tourists every year.

Let`s begin with Fiorentina, then. Founded in August 1926, it has won 2 Italian championships, 6 Coppa Italia and 1 Italian Supercup. Moreover, having won the Cup Winners Cup in the season 1960-1961, Fiorentina was the first Italian team to win a European competition.

The "Viola", as its supporters call Fiorentina, plays its home matches at the "Artemio Franchi" stadium. Nowadays surrounded by the Florentine villas and palaces in the district of Campo di Marte, it was built in the early 1930s according to a (for the time) revolutionary design by engineer Nervi.

As far as running and walking competitions are concerned, certainly the most important are the Firenze Marathon (taking place every year in November), the Guarda Firenze (this non-competitive race is held in May) and the Notturna di San Giovanni (which takes place in June, the day of Florence patron saint, in the evening).
