Florence Paintings of the Last Supper
The following is an itinerary at the discovery of works of art that are almost unknown to tourists and to most of the Florentine. The
cenacolo is a painting of the Last Supper decorating the refectories in convents and monasteries. Apart from the
Cenacolo di San Salvi, all Florentine
cenacoli follow the same pictorial scheme, featuring Jesus between Saint Peter and Saint John, whereas Judas Iscariot is set apart.
The itinerary begins in
Oltrarno where the
Cenacolo di Santo Spirito, by Andrea Orcagna, and some sculptures are to be admired.
Cross Ponte alla Carraia and Piazza Goldoni and reach Borgo Ognissanti. The
Church of Ognissanti houses a fresco of the Last Supper by Domenico Ghirlandaio.
Pass by Santa Maria Novella railway station and take Via Nazionale. The first street on the right is Via Faenza, where the
Cenacolo di Foligno is conserved. This magnificent 15th-century fresco was painted by Perugino’s pupils.
Follow Via Nazionale and turn right in Via XXVII Aprile. Here the
Cenacolo di Sant’Apollonia is conserved. Andrea del Castagno painted the fresco between 1445 and 1450.
Not far from here, the refectory of the monastery of San Marco houses a second Last Supper by Domenico Ghirlandaio, painted around 1482.
Other paintings representing the Last Supper are conserved in the Museo dell’Opera di Santa Croce.
The
Cenacolo di San Salvi was painted by Andrea del Sarto and is conserved in the refectory of the monastery of San Salvi, outside Florence historical centre.
