Monteriggioni is located only 20 km from Siena and by car you can reach the historic center of Siena in 20 minutes. The Castle dates back to 1200 and, from the hill on which is situated, dominates the entire valley. From Monteriggioni you can reach Florence in about 1 hour and a half by car and enter the famous Chianti area in a few minutes. Going south in about an hour you can get to Montalcino in Val d'Orcia.

Monteriggioni Castle was built by the Sienese in 1200 to protect the city from the attacks of Florence. The castle remained impregnable until 1554 when Governor Zeti, betraying Siena, opened the great medieval gates to let in the soldiers of Florence. In less than a year the Florentines were able to conquer Siena. The betrayal of Monteriggioni cost much to the city, but today the Castle is an excellent calling card for Siena and from the north observing the medieval castle with its walls and towers is a unique experience for both tourists and local inhabitants.
