Valdarno: Territory
The Upper
Valdarno extends southwards from the Arezzo plain, traditionally from Ponte a Buriano, and is bordered to the west by the
Chianti mountains and to the east by
the massif of Pratomagno, a watershed between the Val darno and Casentino; it is closed to the north close to the confluence of the Sieve and the Arno at Pontassieve. In the Pliocene the valley of the Arno was a vast lake: numerous fascinating fossil relics from the period can be seen in the Museo Paleontologico in Montevarchi.

`Balze del Valdarno`
The waters of the lake carved out what are now one of the most fascinating landscape attractions of the valley, the cliff-like erosions in the rock located between the territories of Castelfranco di Sopra, Pian di Sco and Terranuova Bracciolini known as le Balze, and portrayed in the background of several works by Leonardo da Vinci. These form one of the many protected areas of the
Valdarno region, among which worthy of mention are the Riserva Naturale Valle dell`lnferno e Bandella, the Riserva Naturale di Ponte Buriano e Penna, all of which are traversed by numerous footpaths, cycle
tracks and bridle paths . The entire area is of great interest
in terms of landscape and naturalistic aspects, both the valley and the hills cloaked in vineyards and olive groves, while ascending towards the watershed we come to forested areas, more specifically woods of oaks, chestnuts and beech
trees
