Tuscany Under the Medici
In spite of being tormented by bloody internal disputes, in the 14th century Florence imposed its over most of Tuscany. An important member of the Medici family, in 1434 Cosimo the Elder became the Lord of Florence, while maintaining the republican institutions.

The Medici family held the power in Florence until Gian Gastone’s death in 1737. Important patrons of science and the arts, thanks to shrewd alliances the Medici transformed Florence and – following the creation of the Grand Duchy in 1569 – Tuscany into important political subjects in Europe.
