Historical villas of Florence : Castello Villa

Castello Villa was bought by Medici family in 1477. The grand duke Cosimo I commissioned Tribolo to renovate it. Tribolo was also asked to realize a park that, today, is considered among the first examples of italian gardens. This garden has represented a model for a long time. With their intervention, Cosimo I together with Tribolo, realized an architectural masterpiece of their time. The aim of Cosimo I was to exalt his own glory through the realization of opulent works of architecture: the fountain of Hercules and Caco, the Venus of Giambologna, the animals cave, the January statue of Ammanati. It was in this villa that Botticelli realized his two world-known masterpieces : “Primavera” (Springtime) and “Nascita di Venere” (Venus birth). When the Medici dinasty fell down Castello Villa passed, first under the dominance of Lorena family and, then, under that of Savoia family. Today Castello Villa is the centre of the Crusca Academy (a very important institution for the study of the Italian language).
