The characteristic district of Oltrarno in Florence

The district of Oltrarno extends on the left bank of the Arno river. The Oltrarno is the Florence of the old trades and traditions. The best way to explore it is walking around and discover not just the craftman workshops, the markets and the typical trattorias but also the beauty of the churches, the squares, the monuments and the museums. As soon as you have settled in your apartment in Florence , go and discover the Oltrarno and its districts: San Niccolò, San Frediano, and Santo Spirito.

A tour in the Oltrarno district will make the difference in your stay in Florence. Go for a walk in San Niccolò: in the evening you’ll end your day in one of the winebars near Porta San Giorgio, at lunch time you can take a break from sightseeing. What about seeing Florence avoiding the confusion of the city centre? Keep walking till Piazzale Michelangelo and you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the city at sunset.

Are you interested in visiting churches? Here in Oltrarno you will find many: in the district of San Frediano stop to visit the Brancacci chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine with the frescos by Masaccio, as well a s the church of San Frediano in Cestello or the church of Santa Felicita. If you are in Santo Spirito don’t miss the church of Santo Spirito: to fully appreciate the facade, and to indulge in some minutes of relax, take a seat in one of the cafés in the square opposite the church – can you imagine a better occasion for a coffee break? If you are on holiday in Florence during the summer a coffee or a drink in one of the open bars of the square are the ideal.

Some more history and culture? The Oltrarno offers museums for all tastes. Pitti Palace hosts most of them: from the Palatina Gallery to the Costume Gallery, to the Gallery of Modern Art, to the Museo degli Argenti (Silverware Museum) – you will surely find the right one for you!

Would you like to satisfy your curiosity? Why don’t you follow the tracks of the many Sunday markets that animate the Oltrarno squares? The Santo Spirito market or the smaller daily district markets are the right place to find original presents to bring back home as a souvenir of your holidays in Florence . Or why don’t you take the chance to turn yourself into a chef and prepare a nice dinner in your apartment? And what about the numerous craftman shops? Round every single corner you will find Florentine crafman shops – have a look inside just out of curiosity!

Do you want to dive into nature? The gardens in Oltrarno are beautiful and their statues and monuments create a perfect mix of cultural entertainment and open air activity. A stroll in the Boboli garden on a sunny day will leave you a lovely memory, whenever the season of your visit in Florence is. A trip to savour? What Florentine district better than Oltrarno can offer you lunches, dinners or small but tasty snacks or genuine and cheap aperitifs in cosy and familiar environments? A break in one of the restaurants or trattorias in Santo Spirito, San Frediano and San Niccolò will make you taste the flavour of the Florentine culinary tradition nd feel like to come back on holidays here again.
