The Florentine Republic

Piazza della Signoria - Savonarola`s execution
Following Pietro de` Medici`s expulsion, in 1494 the Dominican Girolamo Savonarola established a republican government in Florence. The friar, who preached the return to sobriety of habits and humility, kindled the Florentine.

In 1498, the Franciscans guided an uprising against Savonarola. Following the uprising, the Signoria decided to arrest the friar, who was accused of heresy, hanged and burnt on the stake in Piazza della Signoria. It was May 22nd, 1498. A plaque has been set in the exact place of the execution in Piazza della Signoria.

For 14 years Florence was the theatre of violent struggles. Only in 1512 was peace restored, when Giovanni de` Medici moved to Florence. The following year Giovanni was elected Pope with the name of Leo X.

The Medici`s power was increasingly reducing and in 1527, when Charles V defeated Clement VII, the second Medici Pope, the Florentine banished the family from the town. In 1532, the Duchy of Florence was assigned to Alessandro de` Medici, who was killed in 1537 by his cousin Lorenzino.
