Florence - Santa Croce and its Neighbourhood
Thanks to its huge size, in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance Piazza Santa Croce was the perfect theatre for numerous religious ceremonies and other convivial events. In the years during which Girolamo Savonarola ruled Florence, Piazza Santa Croce was the theatre of tragic episodes, such as the execution of heretic.
At present the tournament of
Calcio in costume (football as it was played in the Middle Ages) is still played in Piazza Santa Croce. The "Calcio in costume" is a mixture of football and rugby.
The narrow streets around Piazza Santa Croce are scattered with ancient "osterias", small bars and restaurants where to taste the traditional dishes of Florentine and Tuscan cuisine.
