Florence - Santa Maria Novella and its Neighbourhood

Just a few metres from Santa Maria Novella railway station rises the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. The Dominican Friars manage the Basilica, one of Florence most important churches, where in the past several Popes lived during their stays in Florence

The church commands Piazza Santa Maria Novella, a suggestive square where private traffic is forbidden and people can admire the façade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella

On the contrary, Piazza della Stazione, at the back of the Basilica - where is situated Florence main railway station - is a vast square open to private traffic, which during the night looks quite rough.

From the 16th to the 19th century, the so-called Palio dei Cocchi (a carriage race around the square) was held in Piazza Santa Maria Noella.

Things to see near Piazza Santa Maria Novella:

... Santa Maria Novella

... Church of Ognissanti

... Church of Santa Trinità

Ponte Santa Trinita - Bartolomeo Ammannati built the Ponte Santa Trinita in 1567 by order of Cosimo I. "Santa Trinita" is the Florentine version for the Italian "Santa Trinità", which means Holy Trinity. The German destroyed the bridge during their 1944 hasty withdrawal from Florence Instead of building a new bridge, the Florentine engineers decided to reconstruct ... Ponte Santa Trinita

Cenacolo di Foligno - The Cenacolo di Foligno was discovered in the 19th century in a Florentine convent. The fresco is classical representation of the Last Supper: Judas Iscariot holds thirty pieces of silver, the bribe for his betrayal, whereas Saint John drowses near Jesus. Perugino`s pupils may have painted the Cenacolo in late 15th century to the design ... Cenacolo di Foligno

Palazzo Corsini - In 1649, the Medici family sold Palazzo Corsini to the Corsini family. At that time, the Corsini were gaining importance in Florence: Lorenzo Corsini became Pope with the name of Clement XII. The Corsini family began the works for the façade, which lasted until 1735. The distinctive element of the Palazzo is the corkscrew staircase in the inside, that the Florentine ... Palazzo Corsini

The Cascine - Close to the district of Santa Maria Novella there is Porta al Prato. Porta al Prato was one of Florence`s gates that have come through the demolition of Florence city walls in 1871. The brides of the various members of the Medici family used to enter Florence in triumph from Porta al Prato followed by festive processions, heading then for Palazzo Vecchio ... The Cascine

Palazzo Strozzi - Palazzo Strozzi is Florence most important Renaissance building. Filippo Strozzi could build so imposing a Palazzo only thanks to an expedient. Filippo Strozzi wanted his new residence to be bigger than that of his rivals, the Medici family. He then presented to Lorenzo the Magnificent some modest plans. It was Lorenzo who suggested that Filippo should build a more majestic Palazzo. The foundations were laid in 1489. Today ... Palazzo Strozzi

Museo Ferragamo - The Ferragamo family, owner of the homonymous footware factory and fashion house, bought the 14th-century austere Palazzo Spini-Ferroni. The Palazzo houses the Museo delle Calzature Ferragamo, exhibiting some of the most famous shoe models designed by Ferragamo for princesses and actresses all over the world ...
