Florence - Santa Maria Novella and its Neighbourhood: The Cenacolo di Foligno
Cenacolo di Foligno - Via Faenza 42
The
Cenacolo di Foligno was discovered in the 19th century in a Florentine convent. The fresco is a classical representation of the Last Supper: Judas Iscariot holds "thirty pieces of silver", the bribe for his betrayal, whereas Saint John drowses near Jesus.
Perugino`s pupils may have painted the
Cenacolo in late 15th century to the design of their master. The fresco presents unusual elements, such as its brilliant colours and the figure of Jesus in the background, praying in the garden while the Apostles sleep.
