Historic Villas in the Chianti Region: Real Architectural Masterpieces

In the course of the centuries, the extraordinarily beautiful landscapes have attracted to Chianti not only the Tuscan nobility, but also Siena, Arezzo and Florence bourgeoisie.

It was above all for the beautiful landscapes, the cool air and the country delicacies that the Tuscan richest families decided to have their new master`s houses built in the Chianti region. These residences have now become prestigious villa, real architectural masterpieces that house wonderful works of art, statues, frescoes, valuable wooden handicrafts and decorations.

Most of these villas date back to the Renaissance. In the course of the centuries, some of them became real farm-villas; others underwent radical refurbishments in the 18th and 19th centuries. They usually are cubic or parallelepiped-shaped and have wide windows decorated with stuccos; most of them have also wide and fresh cellars for ageing and storing wine!
Nowadays, many of these villas can be rented for unforgettable holidays in the Chianti region!

Let`s discover some of the most prestigious...

  • Villa Borromeo certainly stands out for its antiquity and beauty. Surrounded by green cypress trees, the villa stands near San Casciano in Val di Pesa and has an excellent restaurant where you can end your visit.

  • Not far from Villa Borromeo stands Villa del Cigliano, surrounded by a magnificent garden. The villa belongs to the Antinori family. You will have the opportunity to visit also its wine cellars.

  • Villa Le Corti is situated in San Casciano, as well. It belongs to the Corsini family and houses valuable sculptures and paintings. You can visit its two chapels, the wide park and the unfailing historic wine cellars.

  • It is impossible not to mention the beautiful Renaissance Villa Corsini a Mezzomonte (literally, half hill), which owes its name to the fact that it was built halfway to the top of a hill. The villa belonged to the Medicis, who commissioned the many frescoes, the gorgeous garden and the valuable ceiling decorations... Spellbinding!

  • Villa Chigi Saracini is located in Castelnuovo Berardenga and was built only in the early 19th century. Its construction caused the demolition of part of the town`s city walls.

  • Last but not least, not far from Villa Chigi Saracini stand Villa Geggiano and the more recent Villa di Monaciano.

We have just mentioned some of the most architecturally and artistically interesting villas. Obviously, everything depends on your taste for discovery and on your will to add something new to your holidays in Tuscany and in the Chianti region...
