The Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence



The Basilica of Santa Croce is one of the major churches in Florence, that you absolutely have to visit before your holiday in Florence ends. If you get to Santa Croce from Palazzo Vecchio through the myriads of winding roads that connect the historical city centre to this area, you will see the basilica at the very end of the square of the same name.

Just from the outside, the scene that you will find yourself in front of, will be definitely magnificent: the facade of the basilica is beautifully decorated by the elegant geometries of the white, green and pink marbles. You can admire it in all its splendour and in total tranquillity sitting on one of the stone benches at the sides of the square. This picture will surely be one of the unforgettable memories of your stay in Florence .

A visit to the inside of the basilica is really worth some of your time. The basilica hosts the graves of many illustrious personalities: scientists, writers, artists from Michelangelo to Galileo to Machiavelli. Walking along the wide nave and aisle you’ll find out that many other notable people were buried here. A full-blown pantheon of artists, enriched by the frescoes by Giotto all along the walls of the chapels and the basilica.

The fourteenth century closter, on the right side of the facade, is the access to the beautiful Cappella dei Pazzi, Filippo Brunelleschi’s masterpiece and marvellously enriched by the various works of art of other Reinassance artists. The second closter is a fantastic spot to peacefully enjoy the beauty of the basilica and its compound, as well as the ideal place to take some rest after all the visiting.
